Barkha R Patel is the Director of Infrastructure for Jersey City, NJ, one of the most densely-populated and ethnically diverse cities in the country. As Director, Barkha oversees the planning, design, and implementation of the City’s critical public infrastructure including all municipal streets, transit, parks, public spaces, buildings, and other public facilities. She serves as a senior advisor to the Mayor and leads the City’s Architecture, Engineering, Transportation, Sustainability, and Innovation agencies, which are responsible for over $600 million of capital improvements to enhance the quality of life for Jersey City’s residents and visitors.
As a public official and advocate, Barkha’s work is rooted in a commitment to justice, equity and smart growth. She is responsible for the implementation of many of Jersey City’s most transformational initiatives including the City’s first Vision Zero and Climate Action plans, first on-demand microtransit system, a robust network of protected bikeways and safe streets, a renowned plaza program, a number of award-winning parks and public spaces, and inclusive community engagement processes. These initiatives have made Jersey City a national leader in transportation, sustainability, and placemaking. Under Barkha’s leadership, the City has experienced a year with zero traffic fatalities on municipal streets, redesign of streets to prioritize walking, cycling, and transit, consistent expansion of green open space and recreational opportunities, transition to energy-efficient municipal buildings, increased investment in urban forestry, and the incorporation of cultural identity within the built environment through meaningful infrastructure improvements.
Barkha began her career with Jersey City in 2016 as a staff planner. During her tenure, she has helped elevate the role of urban planning and design within city government. She was instrumental in establishing the City's first Transportation Division and Infrastructure Department, creating several new positions under each agency. With almost 10 years of professional experience, Barkha’s work is frequently featured in local and national publications, and she has been the keynote speaker at industry conferences and events across the country. Prior to joining Jersey City, Barkha earned a both a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and a Master’s Degree in City and Regional Planning from Rutgers University. As her portfolio expands, Barkha is currently exploring ways to infuse joy and dignity into the public realm through her work.
